Mattermost Access and Login Troubleshooting
Overview
Use this guide if you are having trouble accessing Mattermost, joining a team or channel, signing in, receiving notifications, or using Mattermost on a mobile device.
This guide covers common Mattermost issues across IL2, IL4, and IL5 environments, including application access, account provisioning, authentication, licensing, mobile access, notifications, and account inactivity.
Before troubleshooting, make sure you are accessing the correct Mattermost environment for your approved access.

If the steps below do not resolve your issue, report a Mattermost issue to the P1 Help Desk .
Before you begin
Before troubleshooting Mattermost, confirm the following:
- You have a P1 account.
- You have been approved for access to the appropriate Mattermost environment.
- You have logged into the target Mattermost environment at least once.
- You are using the correct Mattermost environment: IL2, IL4, or IL5.
- You are using the required authentication method for that environment.
- You have an active Mattermost license, if one is required for your environment or access level.
Initial Mattermost login requirement
Mattermost uses JIT provisioning.
Before another user can add you to a team or channel, you must log into the target Mattermost environment at least once. Your account may not appear in user-selection lists until you complete your initial login.
If you have not completed your initial login, do so before asking a Team Administrator or Channel Administrator to add you to a team or channel.
Mattermost application access issues
If you receive an error indicating that you have not been granted access to the Mattermost application group, your P1 account may not have the required environment assignment or Mattermost license.
Error: Your account has not been granted access to this application group yet
This message may indicate that:
- Your account has not completed its initial login.
- Your account does not have the required Keycloak IL group assignment.
- Your Mattermost license has not been assigned for the applicable environment.
- You are attempting to access an environment for which you have not been approved.
What to do
- Confirm that you have logged into the target Mattermost environment at least once.
- Confirm that you are accessing the correct IL.
- If you recently received access, allow the provisioning process to complete.
- If the error continues, contact your Onboarding Supervisor or the P1 Customer Success Team to verify your access and license assignment.
- If your organization does not have an Onboarding Supervisor or the issue requires additional assistance, submit a Mattermost support request .
WARNING
Do not create another P1 account to resolve a Mattermost access problem.
Team and channel access issues
You cannot be found when someone tries to add you
If a Team Administrator or Channel Administrator cannot find your account when attempting to add you:
- Confirm that you have logged into the target Mattermost environment at least once.
- Make sure you logged into the correct environment.
- Confirm that your Platform One account is active.
- Ask the administrator to try adding you again.
Mattermost uses JIT provisioning, so your account may not be available for team or channel assignment until you complete your initial login.
You cannot join a private team
Private teams require an invitation or manual addition by a Team Administrator.
If you need access to a private team:
- Contact the appropriate Team Administrator.
- Request access to the team.
- Provide any required justification or authorization.
- Wait for the Team Administrator to add you.
P1 cannot determine operational need-to-know. The appropriate administrator must approve access to restricted teams and channels.
Error: Domain not permitted
This message indicates that the team may be configured to allow only users from specific email domains.
Contact the Team Administrator and ask them to verify the team's allowed email-domain configuration.
Do not create another P1 account or use a different email address to bypass the restriction.
You need a new team or channel
Standard Mattermost users cannot create top-level teams.
Request a new Mattermost team or channel through the P1 Help Desk .New teams may include the default Town Square and Off-Topic channels.
Login and authentication errors
Error: An account with that username already exists
This error may occur when the Mattermost account is configured with an authentication method that does not match the expected P1 configuration.
If you receive this message:
- Do not create another account.
- Do not repeatedly attempt registration using different usernames or email addresses.
- Record the exact error message.
- Submit a P1 Help Desk ticket to update your Keycloak profile attributes.
- Include a screenshot of the error, if available.
P1 Support may need to verify or correct the account's authentication configuration.
SAML attribute failure
A SAML attribute error may occur if the account's authentication configuration or required profile attributes are incorrect or incomplete.
If you receive a SAML attribute error:
- Record the exact error message.
- Take a screenshot, if available.
- Submit a P1 Help Desk ticket to convert your authentication method to SAML.
- Explain that you are receiving a SAML attribute error when accessing Mattermost.
Do not create another P1 account to resolve the issue.
Notification troubleshooting
If Mattermost is working but you are not receiving notifications, check your notification settings before submitting a help request.
Check Mattermost notification settings
In Mattermost:
- Open Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Review your desktop and mobile notification settings.
- Make sure notifications are not set to Nothing.
- Confirm that the notification types you need are enabled.
You can also check notification settings for individual channels. A muted channel will not generate notifications for that channel.
Check your device or browser permissions
If Mattermost notifications are enabled but you still do not receive them:
- Confirm that Mattermost is allowed to send notifications on your device.
- Check whether your device is in Do Not Disturb or Focus mode.
- If using Mattermost in a browser, verify that the browser allows notifications for the Mattermost site.
- If using the mobile application, verify that notifications are enabled in the device's application settings.
Mattermost's current documentation recommends checking Mattermost preferences, client permissions, and operating-system notification settings when troubleshooting missing notifications.
Channel notifications are not working
If notifications work elsewhere but not in one channel:
- Open the affected channel.
- Review the channel's notification preferences.
- Confirm that the channel is not muted.
- Confirm that you have not disabled the notification type you are expecting.
A muted channel disables notifications for that channel, including push and desktop notifications.
Account locked or inactive
Error: Your account is locked because of too many failed password attempts
This issue applies to legacy Mattermost accounts using email authentication.
If you receive this message:
- Stop repeatedly attempting to sign in.
- Submit a ticket to the P1 Help Desk to sync your Keycloak MattermostID and unlock the account.
- Provide the exact error message.
- Include a screenshot, if available.
- Request assistance with syncing the Mattermost account information and unlocking the account.
Do not create another account to bypass the lock.
Account deactivated because of inactivity
Mattermost may automatically deactivate accounts after 90 days of continuous inactivity.
If your account has been deactivated because of inactivity:
- Sign in to the applicable Mattermost environment through Keycloak.
- Confirm that your P1 authentication completes successfully.
- Try accessing Mattermost again.
An active Keycloak status should automatically re-enable the Mattermost account.
If you remain unable to access Mattermost after signing in, submit a Mattermost support request .
Authentication works, but Mattermost does not open
If you can successfully authenticate to P1 but cannot open Mattermost, the issue may be related to application access rather than authentication.
Before resetting your password or MFA:
- Confirm that P1 authentication completed successfully.
- Confirm that you are accessing the correct Mattermost environment.
- Read the error displayed by Mattermost.
- Check whether you have been assigned the appropriate Mattermost access and license.
- Contact your Onboarding Supervisor or the P1 Help Desk if access remains unavailable.
INFO
Successfully authenticating to P1 confirms your identity. It does not automatically provide access to every P1 application.
What to include in a help request
If you need help after completing the troubleshooting steps above, provide as much of the following information as possible:
- Mattermost environment: IL2, IL4, or IL5.
- Team or channel name, if applicable.
- Description of the issue.
- Exact error message.
- Screenshot of the error, when available.
- Whether you can successfully authenticate to Platform One.
- Whether you recently received or changed Mattermost access.
- Troubleshooting steps you have already completed.

Protect your account
Never include the following in a help request:
- Passwords.
- MFA or OTP codes.
- MFA QR codes.
- Recovery codes.
- YubiKey PINs.
- Other authentication secrets.
::: note Support personnel should not need your password or authentication codes to troubleshoot your account. :::
